COURSE NAME:  MOVERS for students age 8 – 9

Course Books: “Super Minds” Level 3 and Level 4 by Cambridge University Press.

Class Time: Each class is 1 hour – 15 minutes and the class meets 2 times a week.

The MOVERS courses are based on the skills needed for students to successfully use English at Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).  Our courses use the curriculum called “Super Minds” from Cambridge University Press.  This curriculum offers two courses for this age called “Super Minds Level 3” and “Super Minds Level 4”.

In these courses students work with all aspects of learning English including building vocabulary, learning grammar, writing, listening and speaking.  The themes in these courses help students to grow in their use of English with relevant and meaningful topics.   The courses are designed to help students develop language skills that are appropriate for their age and mental abilities.  The courses use music and rhythm to help learn new vocabulary and make learning fun and interesting.  In the classroom, an electronic white board is used to help students learn using interactive games and activities.  Students also grow in their use of fine motor skills needed in writing and drawing.  The courses also help students develop cognitive skills as a range of thinking skills are taught.  These thinking skills include topics such as making comparisons, sorting and sequencing information, analyzing information and making deductions, recognizing patterns and matching.

In each of these courses students also practice for the Cambridge MOVERS exam with Cambridge designed exam preparation materials.  In exam preparation students are able to practice what they learn in each unit and to develop their language abilities and practice using level A! Skills.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

Super Minds Level 3:  The central theme for the course is “explorers” and their adventures.  This theme is included in each unit with interesting stories and adventures as various language topics are covered in the unit.  The topics covered in this course include a revision of numbers colors and objects, school subjects, food, daily routine, towns, sea creatures, technology, health, countries and weather.

Each unit covers a core of new vocabulary with interesting reading text and stories.  Also, each unit includes two grammar lessons relevant to the theme and students practice the grammar with both writing tasks and speaking tasks.   Also, music and songs are used to help students learn vocabulary and correct pronunciation.  In addition, each lesson has speaking activities and dialogues to help students use the new vocabulary and grammar structures.  Also, each lesson provides a phonics focus incorporated in a story to help students learn and practice specific sounds and to help students develop word recognition and reading skills.  And in each lesson social values are presented in story form to help students discuss and form important life values.

 

Super Minds Level 4:  In this course the explores theme is continued and developed to include adventures and solving mysteries.   The topics covered in this course include history and museums, the world around us, emergencies, transport, hair and face, animal bodies, instruments, space and holiday activities.

As in Super Minds Level 3, each unit covers a core of new vocabulary with interesting reading text and stories.  Also, more advanced grammar topics are studied and practiced with both writing and speaking.  Music and songs are used to help students learn vocabulary and correct pronunciation.  In addition, each lesson has speaking activities with dialogues role plays are introduced to help students use the new vocabulary and grammar structures.  Also, each lesson provides a phonics focus incorporated in a story to help students learn and practice specific sounds and to help students develop word recognition and reading skills.  And again as in Super Minds Level 3, social values are presented in story form to help students discuss and form important life values.

Students progress is regularly monitored throughout the school year.  Students must be actively involved in their study in these courses to complete them successfully.  This includes participation in class activities and regularly completing home tasks.  We keep parents informed of students’ involvement in the courses especially regarding the completion of homework tasks and practice exam results.  Also, we make recommendations for improving their study habits in progress reports to the parents.
